CE marking

What is CE marking?

The letters ‘CE’ appear on many products traded on the extended Single Market in the European Economic Area (EEA).

What is CE marking?

CE stands for ‘Conformité Européenne’, which means ‘European Conformity’. CE marking must be obtained when products enter the European Union market and indicate that the products won't risk human health, safety, or the environment when used. It requires products to comply with relevant EU directives and standards, including product design, manufacture, installation, use, and maintenance.

It is not a quality certification but a mark of conformity. Since 2008, all products sold in the EU market, including toys, electronic products, and medical devices, must bear the CE marking.

CE marking facilitates free circulation and trade within the EU, so products no longer need to undergo additional technical certification in each member state but instead meet the requirements of all EU member states at once.

After learning about CE, Let’s have a test!

  • Is CE marking mandatory?

NO! Although CE marking is required to enter the EU market, only products that comply with specific directives must be CE marked.

  • Does CE marking represent high quality?

NO! CE marking represents quality conformity, but does not mean products have high quality. It only indicates that the products comply with the safety standards of the EU market.

  • Can CE marking be used unconditionally?

NO! The manufacturer must ensure that the products always comply with the relevant standards throughout the production process, otherwise, the CE marking will become invalid.

What is significance of CE marking?

In summary, CE marking is important for both manufacturers and consumers. For manufacturers, CE marking is their “passport” to the EU market.

For consumers, CE marking indicates that the product has undergone a certain degree of testing and evaluation, and has a certain level of safety and reliability. This provides consumers with a guarantee of product quality but also provides them with a reference basis when choosing products.
